What is Beanstock?

Beanstock Coffee Festival is a single-day event to showcase the best independent micro-roasters and celebrate third wave coffee culture. Held in a bright and spacious Railtown warehouse, the immersive experience will exhibit music, local food and drink selections, educational sessions from industry professionals, live demos, unlimited coffee sampling, and a curated market to purchase equipment and coffee to take home. Entry-level tickets provide unlimited coffee samples, a commemorative mug and a ticket for a sample bag of beans from your micro-roaster of choice. Premium tickets also include vouchers for specialty food items, a custom tote bag and two additional bags of coffee beans.

What is Third Wave Coffee?

Third Wave Coffee is a movement to produce high-quality coffee, and consider coffee as an artisanal product, like wine, rather than a commodity. Fun fact: there are over 1,500 aromatic and flavour compounds in coffee. Wine has less than half of that.

DRIP

25 Micro Roasters will be hand brewing their own coffee right in front of you, giving you the chance to pick their brain and find out what makes their coffee so special.

ESPRESSO

In the middle of the festival, you will find an espresso bar and cafe serving coffee from different roasters throughout the day and hosting interactive workshops with industry professionals.

EDUCATION

We will have a coffee education centre with rotating sessions to discover coffee from origin to cup in a variety of approaches.

.

.

STORE

Beanstock will have a market where you can purchase festival swag and a professionally curated selection of coffee equipment.

.

FOOD

- A handful of the best local food and pastry vendors will be serving up fresh - bite sized portions all day.

DRINKS

Local wine, beer, and coffee focused cocktails will be available in the Beanstock Bar and lounge area when you fancy something even stronger than coffee.

Every Coffee Has A Story

It all begins with a fruit.

  • GROW

Coffee is grown at different origins along the equator, each with their own harvest periods and unique flavours. After a coffee tree is planted, in about three to four years the tree begins to bear fruit - the coffee cherry. Inside this cherry is the bean that we all know and love, but it still has a long way to go.

  • PICK

Almost all coffee in the world is hand picked. A good coffee picker can harvest about two hundred pounds of coffee in a day and the cherries can only be harvested during one season of the year. So many people owe their livelihood to a good harvest year so it is essential to take loving care and craft in growing coffee cherries. For the record, each coffee tree can only produce about one pound of coffee per harvest - ponder that for a moment.

  • PROCESS

After the cherries are picked and sorted, they are processed in a number of different ways to remove the cherry and parchment surrounding the bean. The processing of the bean can drastically change the way it tastes, so an alarming amount of skill and science is involved in this process. What you are left with is known in the industry as ‘green.’

  • EXPORT

Once the green beans are properly dried and sorted, they are put into burlap or jute bags, loaded up onto trucks and prepared for export to the rest of the world. Even this stage can affect how the beans will taste if they are not handled with care.

  • ROAST

Roasting coffee is an art in itself, taking countless years to master and even then there is always more to learn. Each roaster has their own unique techniques, manipulating heat, airflow, and time to produce different roast levels and bring out different flavours in coffee. Getting a sense for how delicate the coffee process is?

  • PREPARE

This is the final step in the lifecycle of coffee and the only stage that most of us ever experience. Take a moment to appreciate the journey of your coffee and how many people have been involved in the process the next time you're sipping on your morning cup.
